It all began on a beautiful summer Saturday afternoon. Dwayne Sanchez sits
on his porch, reading a book. His sister comes out of the house, rolling her eyes.
Carrie- Ugh! You read a lot of books, don’t you?
Dwayne- Yeah. So?
Carrie- My God! You’re 17 years old. Go somewhere and get wasted,
or something.
Dwayne- Wait... You want me to get wasted? And give Papa a heart attack?
Are you serious?
Carrie- I’m just saying. Live your teen years to the fullest, not
by reading..
She looks at the cover.
Carrie- "To Kill A Mockingbird"? Oh man! That story is so-
Dwayne- Interesting! I can read this book all day, and not tire of it.
Carrie then scratches her head.
Carrie- Ok then *sighs* Fine. Well, I gotta go anyway.
Dwayne- Where are you going?
Carrie- Don’t worry about it.
She pats him on the head and takes off from the porch. She is then met
by some girlfriends of hers. Dwayne watched as they walked away, and continued reading his book. Carrie"Midnight Fragrance"
(Don’t ask) Sanchez is a run of the mill wild child, who loves to party all night, and unfortunately sleep all day.
The Sanchez family does not approve of what she is doing, for it’s distracting her schoolwork. Only one thing: the family
doesn’t know that she dropped out of college two months ago. As Dwayne finishes the book, he gets up and goes in the
house. As soon as he gets in, he is met up by Mariena, who is his little sister.
Mariena- Hey Dwaynie!
She calls him Dwaynie, because she is a bit too young to say his full name
yet. After all, she’s only 2.
Dwayne picks her up and spins her around. He also gave her a big hug, before
putting her down. He walks into the kitchen, and sees his mother, well step-mother, for his real mom died 4 years ago. They
never really got along. He wanted his father to reconsider marrying Theresa, but his father wouldn’t hear of it. Dwayne
goes into the refrigerator and grabs an apple. He bites into it.
Theresa- *mumbles* Such a pig.
Dwayne just looked at her.
Dwayne- Can I eat this apple without you judging me?
Theresa- I beg your pardon, young man?
Dwayne- I said-
Theresa growls at him saying:
Don’t you ever..EVER talk back to me!
Dwayne- I never said anything to you. All I said was that can I eat this
apple without being called a damn pig.
Theresa crosses herself.
Watch your mouth, boy!
Dwayne- I have a name.
Theresa- You never listen. Just like your father, you never listen to what
I say.
Dwayne- That’s because you always talk about people. For once, can
you be at least kin-
Theresa- That’s enough!
Dwayne- That’s it. I don’t have to take this from you, and
you not even-
Theresa- Your mother?
She walks up to him.
Theresa- I’m your mother now. Grin and bare it.
Dwayne- You are NOT my mother. She knows how to love!
And with that said, he stormed out of the kitchen, and ran upstairs. He
went into his room and slammed the door. He sits on his bed and looks up at the ceiling.
Dwayne- Mama... I need you more than ever. Please, I can’t stand
Theresa. Do you see how she is treating me? I don’t want this to go on. She’s not you, not at all. Mi madre, I
miss you so much. God, I hope you hear me...
Suddenly, he hears someone knocking on his door. It was his father, Juan.
Hijo, su abuela esta abajo. Ella desea hablar con usted. He has told Dwayne
that his grandmother, on his mother’s side, is downstairs, and wants to speak to him.
Dwayne- Sere llanura derecha, papa.
He said he will be right down. Before he leaves his room, Dwayne walks
over to his dresser drawer, and picks up a picture frame. In it was a picture of his mother, Luciana. To Dwayne, and his father,
she was the most beautiful woman in this entire world, and left it too soon. She was only 32. Dwayne and his father was in
the hospital with her, when she was dying of cancer. After she died, their lives changed dramatically. The home they lived
in, filled with love and happiness, was know filled with sadness, and Theresa was not making it better by treating Dwayne
like he’s a run over squirrel.
He says the Hail Mary Prayer in Spanish to her, for he is devoted to
the Catholic faith. He says it on no other language.
After he prayed to his mother, he made his way down the stairs, to talk
to Abuela. He went into the living room, and saw Abuela sitting on the couch.
Abuela- So, you came downstairs without saying hello to Abuela, huh?
Dwayne smiled and said his apologies. He ran to her, and gave her a big
hug, and kissed her on the cheek.
Dwayne- Abuela! Como esta?
Abuela- Muy bien, Mi Nieto (my grandson)
Dwayne- What brings you here?
He still had a smile on his face, for his grandmother is the only person
that has his real mother’s soul.
Abuela- Nieto, I need to tell you something. In fact, I will show you.
Dwayne- Show me what, Abuela?
They both sit down together.
Abuela- Give me your hand, Nieto.
Dwayne gives her his and puts it in palm position. She places a pendent
upon his hand.
Abuela- Now say: Cambio, colgante, cambio.
Dwayne said what was told to him, for he didn’t know why. Suddenly,
the Turquoise pendant turned into a red rose. Dwayne freaked out by jumping out of his seat.
Dwayne- AY!!! DIOS MIO! Cual era ese???
Abuela- The truth. Nieto, you truly are m’ija’s hijo (my daughter’s
son). Dwayne, you are destined.
When Dwayne jumped up, he fell on the floor, and never got up. He stared
at the red rose in shock, and most of all, disbelief.
Dwayne- Destined for what? A freak show?
Abuela couldn’t help but laugh, but Dwayne saw nothing funny about
this.
Abuela- No, no, no. My son, you are a very special person. You have a special
gift. You are, Nieto, a warlock.
Dwayne- A what-lock??
Abuela- A warlock. An immortal with magic. But since your father is not
of Magic blood, you are part warlock.
Dwayne- This is a joke, right? Ok, abuela, where are the cameras? You got
me.
Abuela, who’s name is Maria, had a serious look on her face. She
was not kidding. This was real, if Dwayne wants to believe it or not.
Abuela- My son, this is not a joke. You are what you are. You sister is
also of part Magic blood. Here is a certificate. I was to show you this when you were 16, but...
Dwayne- Abuela, please... I am already having a freakin’ heart attack.
Whatever more surprises you have for me, can you-
Abuela hands Dwayne the certificate. It is an enrollment sheet to Gemstone’s
Magic School. He read the contents. It said:
CONGRATULATIONS!
DWAYNE DOROUGH SANCHEZ, YOU HAVE BEEN ENROLLED INTO OUR FINE
SCHOOL, GEMSTONE’S MAGIC SCHOOL. WE ARE SO PROUD OF HAVING YOU AS A PART OF THIS GREAT UNIT. THE COURSES BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER
31ST. BE PREPARED, AND GOOD LUCK.
Sincerely,
Howard D. Dorough.
P.S., May God bless you, my nephew.
Dwayne- Uncle D. is a warlock as well?
Abuela- Yes, he is. He has worked there for 10 years. You can still feel
at home since he lives there.
Dwayne- Wait, wait wait... You have to live there? You can’t go back
home?
Abuela- I’m afraid not, Nieto. But if you don’t wish to continue
studying there, you can always come back home. They give you options.
Dwayne- Great...I think... What about Carrie? Since she is a Warlock-
Abuela- Wiccan.
Dwayne- Right, Wiccan. If she is what she is, she can enroll with me? Right?
Abuela- I’m afraid not, Nieto.
Dwayne- You say that an awful lot, Abuela. Why?
Abuela- Because...the school she dropped out of was the school that is
enrolling you.
Dwayne- WHAT? You mean she knows she is a Wiccan? And she didn’t
tell me?
Abuela- She wasn’t supposed to. Luciana, your mother, was supposed
to tell you and Carrie. But when she passed away- *She crosses herself* things became complicated. On her death bed, she told
me to tell you and Carrie that you are the Destined. Carrie seemed to like the idea of her becoming a Wiccan, she was 17 at
the time, and that she would love to go to the school. But... she never grasped the knowledge of being who she really is,
and she gave up. What I am trying to say, Nieto, is not to give up. Try your best at this. You will succeed.
Dwayne- Abuela-
Abuela- I am not trying to run your life, Nieto. I am just saying to try
this out.
Dwayne- Well...I have always wondered what it would be like to become a
magic person thing... I never expected that I was one. Abuela, thanks.
Dwayne hugs Abuela again, and kisses her on the cheek.
Dwayne- Abuela, I’ll do it.
Abuela- You have made me so proud, Nieto. You have also made your mother
proud as well.
Dwayne walks over to a window and looks up at the beautiful sky.
Dwayne- I know, Abuela. I know. With all that said, Dwayne had packed up
everything he needed for the school. His father already knew about it, for it was an agreement for the Sanchez family, and
the Dorough family for Dwayne to enroll in the Magic school. The only person that didn’t know about him going to the
school, was Theresa Boniello.
Three Months Later...
Dwayne is awakened by an alarm clock. He sits up and stretches. It is 6:00am,
September 31st. Dwayne gets out of bed and looks in the mirror. He then takes a deep breath.
Dwayne- Well...It’s now or never.
Dwayne hustles to the bathroom to take a quick shower. As soon as he returned
to his room, he heard a strange noise, followed by a person’s voice afterwards.
Person- AY!! My head.
Dwayne peeks into his room, and sees a familiar face. It was his uncle,
Howard Dorough.
Dwayne- Tio? Is that you?
Howard- Yes, Nephew. Are you ready?
Howard laughed, as he saw his nephew in nothing but a towel on.
Howard- Or should I give you sometime?
Dwayne- Heh, heh, heh... Just give me 5 minutes, Tio.
Howard- How about 5 seconds?
Dwayne- Huh?
Suddenly, Howard pointed his finger at Dwayne, and a spark of blue and
white light came from it.
Dwayne- What on Earth.....?
Soon after, Dwayne was dressed in a brown and black uniform (brown long
sleeve shirt, black jeans pants). Dwayne looked at himself in the mirror.
Dwayne- Wow...Snazzy.
Howard- Now you’re ready. Here.
Howard passes him a broomstick.
Dwayne- I know, I know...clean the mess up?
Howard laughed.
Howard- No. This is a Magic Broomstick. Get on it.
Dwayne- Um... Ok...
Howard lead him to the window, which he opened, and told Dwayne to stand
on the ledge.
Dwayne- This is ridiculous, Tio! I’ll fall!
Howard- Not if you say...Fly.
Dwayne- Fly?
Howard- Yes. Say it.
Dwayne- I already did.
Howard- Say it louder so it can activate.
Dwayne- Ok...... FLY!
All of a sudden, Dwayne shot out of the window screaming. He was actually
flying. Dwayne stopped screaming. He was not afraid anymore.
Dwayne- WHOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Howard- He seems to be enjoying himself.
Howard just smiled and chuckled at his intellectual nephew.
Dwayne and Howard flew together on their brooms, on their way to the school.
They were almost there.
Howard- There it is, Sobrino. Gemstone.
Dwayne gazed at the big building. He was amazed.
